September always feels a little bit like a fresh start, doesn't it?
The summer holidays are coming to an end, the kids are heading back to school, routines start to settle down again and suddenly we have a little more structure to our days.
And while January gets all the attention when it comes to "new starts", I actually think September is a much better time to reset your habits.
You've had the summer. You've had the holidays, the lazy mornings, the days out, perhaps a few too many nice lunches... and now it's time to get back to looking after you.
Don't worry!
Life happens.
Maybe you've missed a few classes because you've been away. Perhaps you've been busy with family, work or holidays. Or maybe you've simply got out of the habit.
There's no need to feel guilty about it.
One of the lovely things about Pilates is that you don't have to be "fit" before you come back.
You just start where you are.
And your body will thank you for it.
When it comes to Pilates, I would much rather you did one class every week consistently than pushed yourself incredibly hard once in a blue moon.
Your body responds to regular movement.
Pilates helps you build strength, improve mobility, develop better body awareness and keep your joints moving through a healthy range of movement.
And perhaps most importantly, it gives you a little bit of time in your week that is just for you.
No emails.
No washing.
No shopping list.
No one asking what's for dinner.
Just you, your body and an hour to move.
This is something I hear all the time:
"I'm not flexible enough for Pilates."
You don't need to be!
Pilates isn't about being able to put your leg behind your head or perform some impressive Instagram-worthy shape.
It's about learning to move your body well.
We work with the body you have today.
Some days you'll feel stronger. Some days you'll feel stiff. Some days a movement that felt easy last week might feel completely different.
That's normal.
Your body isn't a machine. It changes. It's organic. It's anti-fragile - the more you move the stronger you will be.
You don't need to make huge promises to yourself.
You don't need to decide you're going to exercise seven days a week.
You don't need a dramatic transformation.
Just start with something manageable.
One Pilates class a week.
Then change something else to improve your life
And another....
Before you know it, you've created habits again.
And those little consistent efforts can make a surprisingly big difference to how you feel.
So if you've been thinking, "I really need to get back to Pilates..."
Consider this your little nudge.
September is a lovely time to start again.
And if you've never tried Pilates before, it's also a great time to give it a go.
You don't have to be good at it.
You just have to turn up. 💚
Your future self will probably thank you for it.
